TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – A miner lost his life on Sunday at Toronto- and New York-listed Coeur d’Alene Mines’ Palmajero silver/gold mine, in Mexico while performing maintenance work on surface equipment.

The company on Monday said the incident took place outside the underground mine in the vicinity of the south portal and involved an employee falling while performing maintenance work on a piece of surface equipment.

The authorities were notified and the incident was under investigation by the company and the local police.

“Work in the underground portion of the mine has been suspended pending completion of the investigation. The openpit mine and milling facilities remain in operation,” the miner said in a statement.

The Palmarejo mine was the company’s largest contributor of sales during the second quarter, having produced 2.4-million ounces of silver and 31 258 oz of gold in the second quarter.

The mine, which employs about 1 000 people, is located 420 km by road south-west of the state capital city of Chihuahua, and 15 km north-west of the town of Témoris.
