Mexico City, June 19, 2025. – The Mining Development Trust (FIFOMI), under the direction of the Ministry of Economy, unveiled an ambitious vision to transform into a key development bank for the Mexican economy. With the support of the Association of Mining Engineers, Metallurgists, and Geologists of Mexico (AIMMGM), it aims to promote responsible, sustainable, and socially conscious mining, marking a renewed commitment to the sector and its vital role in national development.

This vision was shared by Fernando Aboitiz Saro, Head of the Extractive Activities Coordination Unit, and Rubén Del Pozo Mendoza, National President of AIMMGM, during the signing of a collaboration agreement.

The agreement seeks to establish a framework for collaboration to promote strategies and actions supporting the technical and ongoing training of individuals and companies involved in small- and medium-scale mining, in accordance with their respective competencies, applicable regulations, budget availability, and financial resources.

For Del Pozo Mendoza, the signing of the document demonstrates the commitment of AIMMGM and the Ministry of Economy, led by Marcelo Ebrard, to materialize efforts “that will result in the training of human resources in Earth Sciences, which are so necessary in these times of change.”

The initiative also aims to strengthen the training of professionals in geology, mining, and metallurgy, with a focus on industry-academia collaboration. “What’s needed is to realize the opportunities for students who have academic work in the classroom. We must open the doors of the industry so they can apply the knowledge gained in the classroom and strengthen it; this is the so-called dual education,” Del Pozo noted.

“Today marks a great beginning among mining companies, associations, colleges, universities, and the government to seriously promote this issue,” stated Aboitiz Saro, adding that FIFOMI’s vision is not for mining to remain merely a primary activity but to become “the first industry of all, one that establishes serious education. We will transition from being a primary activity to the leading industry that puts this into practice,” he emphasized.

The Head of the Extractive Activities Coordination Unit highlighted FIFOMI’s vast potential, stating, “I believe it can be a major development bank, not only for this industry but for many sectors.”

A significant milestone is the signing of this agreement, the first joint event between the mining sector and the government in six years, focused on education. This meeting underscores the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange.

FIFOMI, the Economy official declared, aspires to be “close to mining operations, rather than merely acting as a financial intermediary. For this reason, it will focus on the social aspect and the spirit of collaboration, training, and generating added value, seeking to integrate mining with education and innovation.”

Aboitiz Saro was an honorary witness to the agreement signed between AIMMGM and FIFOMI, represented by Diego Gómez Olmos, who stated that in less than six months, the organization has supported small- and medium-scale mining and its value chain.

He affirmed that strengthening training and technical assistance through programs developed by FIFOMI and AIMMGM will drive growth, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises, optimizing their processes and increasing their operational capacity.
